Feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders? We’ve all been there.
The good news is we have the word of God to help us get through life’s challenges. Philippians 4:4-9 lays out a clear framework for finding peace that surpasses all understanding. Let’s break it down into actionable steps that will help you feel lighter and more joyful in no time. Here’s how you can use these powerful verses to find peace this week:
Step 1: REJOICE
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” — Philippians 4:4
Paul hits us with this command not once, but twice. That means it’s important. Your first step to peace is to rejoice in the Lord. It’s time to focus on something that makes you glad about God. Whether your life is a cakewalk or feels like a never-ending struggle, there’s always something God has done or is doing. Rejoice in that – out loud! Remind yourself, the enemy, and anyone who’ll listen of God’s goodness.
Example: “God, thank you for waking me up this morning. My God woke me up, fed me, and kept a roof over my head. Even if that’s all I have, it’s more than enough to rejoice about.”
Step 2: Show Gentleness to Everyone
“Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand.” — Philippians 4:5
In a world that tempts us to react out of frustration, fear, or worry, gentleness is your secret weapon. The Greek word here, “Epieikes,” translates to gentle, moderate, and patient. When you feel like snapping, remember this call to be gentle and patient, especially in front of others. Your calm demeanor can influence your peace and the peace of those around you.
Step 3: Trade Anxiety for Prayer
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” — Philippians 4:6
Here’s a practical formula for peace: trade your anxiety for prayer. Grab a piece of paper (yes, actual paper). List every negative emotion you’re feeling and why. Write down, “I’m mad because…,” “I’m scared for…,” “I’m worried about…”. Then, look up one scripture that applies to your most overwhelming concern. One by one, give those worries to God, crossing them off your list as you go. Say, “God, I give you my frustration from work today. Thank you for taking this burden from me.”
Step 4: Embrace the Peace of God
“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7
After you’ve traded your anxieties for prayers, embrace the peace that only God can give. This peace doesn’t make sense in human terms – it’s beyond understanding. But it will guard your heart and mind, keeping you centered and calm amidst life’s storms.
Step 5: Focus on the Good
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” — Philippians 4:8
Your mind is a battlefield. Focus on what’s true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy. Replace negative thoughts with these positive ones. It’s not about ignoring reality but about choosing to see the good that’s always present.
Step 6: Practice What You’ve Learned
“What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” — Philippians 4:9
Paul reminds us to put these lessons into practice. It’s not enough to read or hear these words – live them out daily. When you do, the God of peace will be with you, guiding you through every situation.
